Extended Post Care Support

Supporting young people aged 18 to 21 who are leaving, or have left, the care of the Department of Child Safety

Extended Post Care Support (EPCS)

Extended Post Care Support (EPCS) is a program designed to provide stronger, more tailored support for young people transitioning from care to adulthood.

Recognising that turning 18 doesn’t mean you’re suddenly on your own, EPCS offers a supportive bridge to help young adults aged 18 to 21 build their independence with confidence. The program delivers culturally appropriate, practical assistance – offering proactive, respectful, and hands-on help that aligns with each young person’s goals and circumstances.

To ease the cost of independent living, eligible young adults may receive up to $16,000 per year to help cover essential living expenses. For those who remain with a former carer or guardian, the extended care allowance continues from age 19 to 21 – helping maintain a stable, supported home. With both financial assistance and personalised guidance, EPCS empowers young adults to make informed decisions and build a strong foundation for their future.

Who is this service for?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and wider community young adults who:

  • Turn 18 after 1 July 2023, noting financial support ends on the young adult’s 21st birthday, and
  • Have left statutory care to live independently (not staying with a carer)
  • Left statutory care at 18 years to live in their own arrangements, and
  • Are receiving broader culturally appropriate support from an EPCS provider.
