Residential care supports young people aged 12-17 with complex needs in small group settings, offering an alternative to family-based care

This service is available in:

Residential Care (Resi)

Residential care is provided to young people in special facilities (not their own or a carer’s home). Residential care offers an alternative to family-based care and helps support the young person’s development during adolescence.

Residential care aims to prepare the young person for reunification with their family, transition to a family-based placement, or move to another appropriate care setting that addresses their specific needs. Importantly helping the transition to independent living, ensuring that each young person’s needs are met through appropriate planning and support.

In some cases, residential care offers a stable medium to long-term placement when assessments determine that a non-family-based setting is the most appropriate way to meet the young person’s needs and evolving circumstances.

Who is this service for?

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who:

  • Are aged 12 to 17
  • Are unable to live with their families or in family-based care settings
  • Require a structured, non-family environment
  • Need short-term care, transition to a family placement, or preparation for independence living

Referrals

Referrals can only be made by Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety (DoFSDSCS)
